https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/46716415/download.mp3

Women’s World Football Show, Episode 196 – Featuring Amy Sayer, Australia Women’s National Team and Stanford University Midfielder

The last time Amy Sayer was on our show was in 2018 when she was only 16-years old. Now all grown up and attending Stanford University in California, Amy is really making a name for herself in D1 soccer for the acclaimed university.

Amy Sayer

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Amy Sayer came up through the national team youth system, playing for the U17 and U20 Australia Women’s National Team. Starting academy play at only 11-years old, Amy was picked up by Canberra United of the W-League at just 14-years old. She then joined her hometown team Sydney FC before making her senior Matilda debut at Tournament of Nations in 2018 against Japan.

After graduating high school, Amy brought her game to America where she’s playing and studying at Stanford University. Now she’s embracing American culture (yes she has a hunting license!) and improving her game to be the best she can be on the pitch and off. She talks about her role model Lisa DeVanna, Women’s World Cup 2023, and more! Amy is part of the future of the Matildas and you do not want to miss this interview! (8′)

Ellie Carpenter, WWFShow, Women’s World Football Show, Portland Thorns FCAt only 18 years of age, Ellie Carpenter is already making a name for herself as one of the most versatile footballers in the women’s game today. The Australian international joined Portland Thorns FC this season in the NWSL and she’s already living like a local. Ellie stops by to chat about her experiences in Portland, how playing alongside some of the greatest players in the world has helped shape her game, and what she hopes to takeaway from the experience.

We also delve deep into the life of a teenager as a professional athlete. Ellie made her debut for the Australian Women’s National Team at the tender age of 15 and became the youngest female footballer to ever compete in the Olympic Games (2016 RIO Olympics). In her NWSL debut with the Portland Thorns, Ellie became the youngest player to appear in an NWSL game and holds the record for the youngest player to score a goal in the league.

Does it get tiring having everyone focus so much on age? Is she able to form friendships outside of football, and how does she balance it all? Ellie gives us her thoughts on this and much more. If you’re a young player looking for a player you can look up to and relate with, Ellie is the one! And if you’re an old geezer (like Patty), this interview is guaranteed to make you feel hopeful about the future! (5:00’)

We hear soundbites from Courage head coach Paul Riley and forward McCall Zerboni, who discuss this special team, the move from WNY to North Carolina and the tight atmosphere of the group. Chicago Red Stars
The Chicago Red Stars remain a fascination in the NWSL. With a team stacked with USWNT stars and a ton of impact players, it’s amazing that this team doesn’t have a few NWSL Championship trophies on the mantle, not to mention one single finals appearance. To discuss the phenomenon, Patty chats with Chicago sports writer John D. Halloran. As one of the more respected voices in American women’s soccer journalism, John gives us a unique look at one of the best franchises in the league. What are they missing? Do we praise or blame Coach Dames? And where will Christen Press be next season? If you are a Red Stars supporter or wanna-be supporter, you do not want to miss this introspective report. (1:03:00’)
