On the other end of the spectrum, USA head coach Jill Ellis speaks to the media about the transitions of her team. It’s a ‘process’ and that process starts here and now, running head-first into 2019. Episode 102: Simone Magill, Kendall Johnson, Katya Gokhman

http://traffic.libsyn.com/wwfshow/102_WWFShow_7_16_17.mp3

Episode 102 of Women’s World Football Show features interviews with Everton Ladies and Northern Ireland striker Simone Magill, Portland Thorns FC defender Kendall Johnson and Russian midfielder Katya Gokhman.

In our featured interview, Adam sits down with Simone Magill to chat about Everton Ladies FC promotion to the FAWSL 1, the future of Northern Ireland WNT and the path she paved for herself to get to the top. The young striker made her senior international debut at age 15, claiming Northern Ireland Women’s Premier League Player of the Year in 2010/2012 and Top Goal Scorer 2011/2012. At 18, Simone made the move to Everton in 2013 and now is one of the veterans on the squad, riding the wave from relegation to promotion and beyond.

Simone takes us through her recent world record breaking goal, scoring the fastest-ever international goal, breaking Alex Morgan’s record. During the 2016 European Qualifying match against Georgia, the 11-second goal beat the previous 12 second goal scored by Morgan. What was that experience like and what does that milestone mean? Simone shares the details and more! (3:16′)

Kendall Johnson
“Trust the path you’re on,” says Portland Thorns FC defender Kendall Johnson. If you don’t fully understand that statement, you will after this insightful, inspiring interview with one of Portland’s favorite natives. Kendall was born and raised in Oregon, idolizing the 99er’s and dreaming of being Brandi Chastain. However, after a hard tackle while at Western Sydney Wanderers in the W-League, Kendall suffered a near career-ending concussion, that put her on a path not of her choosing. The result is a long road to recovery and consequential self-discovery leading to a website, blog and podcast, where she brings her experiences to light, shares stories from other athletes and helps others along the way. (35:13′)
Visit Kendall’s website ArrowLiving.com.
For information on concussions, visit HeadwayFoundation.com.

Katya Gokhman
Katya Gokhman is a great example of someone who continues to carve her own path no matter which road she finds herself on. The Russian midfielder moved to Atlanta Georgia with her family at the tender age of two, discovering soccer a few years later. Adam sits down with Katya to discuss her journey to play for Florida State and then back to her native country of Russia. This uncommon path led Katya from Serbia to Iceland and it hasn’t ended yet! Don’t miss this unique story that is bound to inspire you to never stop chasing your dreams… no matter where they take you! (59:42′)

Sophie chats about her time in Germany, some of the challenges she’s faced and then overcame. She also shares some of her favorite memories, the importance of Coach John Herdman, and her future in the game. If you missed any of Sophie’s WWFShow interviews in the past, you’re in luck, because this is the best one yet! (4:00′)

Kate Gill
Of course we couldn’t celebrate our 100th episode without Matilda icon Kate Gill (her second appearance on the show!) Always the player’s advocate, Kate is still making an impact as a Player Relations Executive for the PFA, Australia’s football player’s union. The W-League 2-time Golden Boot winner (remember all those great Perth Glory days?!!), took time out of her busy traveling schedule to talk about her work in the PFA and what it means for women footballers throughout the world.

Still holding the record for all-time leading goal scorer for the Australian team, the former captain reveals what drives her to fight for player’s rights, why she will always be a Proud Matilda, and what she’s learned about herself since 2015. For Kate Gill supporters, this is a gem interview, and for those who don’t know her – now you know! (33:45′)

Jana Lange
How much more do you know about the German national team and Frauen-Bundesliga now then you did three-and-half years ago? So much more!! Thanks to German sports journalist Jana Lange! She’s back for this special episode to recap the growth of the women’s game in Germany over the past years, the changes we’ve seen, the ups-and-downs of the teams and more! (55:00′)

Sandra Prusina
It was January, 2014 (Episode 8 if you’re counting), when we first welcomed Canadian sports journalist and radio personality Sandra Prusina to the show (and she still keeps coming back!!). So, it’s only fitting that we bring the Calgary girl back on to chat about the past, present and future of the Canada Women’s National Team, it’s extraordinary players, and it’s intense coach. Are we seeing a changing of the guard? How is the soccer landscape changing in Canada? Just how do you pronounce Labbé? And just who is this kid named Jordyn Huitema? It was an interesting year for the USWNT. Their many successes were unfortunately overshadowed by a disappointing Olympic performance in Rio. Karen gives us the highlights, lowlights, best player, what to look forward to in 2017, and more. Plus a spirited discussion on Jill Ellis, Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe! Get out the dramamine because (like USA’s year), it’s a roller coaster of a ride!

Its a league of intrigue and never-ending drama! So, it’s only fair we put the National Women’s Soccer League under the microscope. RJ is here to recap the season that saw great progress and at the same time, cringe-worthy moments (remember the baseball field fiasco in Western New York?). But despite the let-downs of the league, there were plenty up-sides including the emergence of great players, coaches and of course dream endings.

WWFShow delivers their “Best Of” from 2016. As you would expect from a staff of worldwide correspondents, it’s a diversified list. Big thanks to Jana Lange (Germany), Cheryl Downes (Australia), Alana “AJ” Johnson (USA – 1 vote AJ??), Pamela Del Olmo (Mexico), Kaitlyn “Jonesy” Jones (USA), Sarah “The Cowgirl” Hallett (USA, aka Patty’s Barry the Beaver) and Barry the Beaver himself (Canada – can you guess what his list looks like, eh?).

Also…
Patty and Adam share their favorite interviews of the year, favorite moments and they reach their quota for most sound effects in one show! Oh never mind…
