Touting future stars such as Mallory Pugh, Andi Sullivan, Rose Lavelle, Ashley Hatch, Rebecca Quinn and more, the Spirit’s spotlight is turned on high. On the outside looking in, the German Women’s National Team looks to be in shambles. Recent shocking losses, the last-place showing at SheBelieves Cup and the sacking of manager Steffi Jones, made us want to take a closer look. German sportswriter Jana Lange joins us to bring some insight. Jana has spent time with the team, talking to players and doing some digging to bring us all the facts. Was Jones’ firing warranted? Will Germany qualify for the Women’s World Cup? And how do they dig themselves out of the hole and become the football juggernaut we’ve all known and loved to hate? Jana is bringing it. Indigo Gibson
There’s a new star heading to Chicago and her name is Indigo Gibson. Join us as we introduce the young defender from University of California, Berkeley to NWSL fans. Indigo Helped the Cal defense concede the fewest goals (9) in the Pac-12 and was selected as a MAC Hermann Semifinalist (the first Cal player to be honored as a semifinalist since Alex Morgan). A First-Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2017, Gibson played every minute in the regular season, helping the Golden Bears to a 13-6-1 record.

Selected 18th overall in the 2018 NWSL College Draft by Rory Dames, Indigo will help bring leadership and consistency to the backline of the Chicago Red Stars, especially as some of the veterans leave for national team duty. Episode 102 of Women’s World Football Show features interviews with Everton Ladies and Northern Ireland striker Simone Magill, Portland Thorns FC defender Kendall Johnson and Russian midfielder Katya Gokhman.

In our featured interview, Adam sits down with Simone Magill to chat about Everton Ladies FC promotion to the FAWSL 1, the future of Northern Ireland WNT and the path she paved for herself to get to the top. The young striker made her senior international debut at age 15, claiming Northern Ireland Women’s Premier League Player of the Year in 2010/2012 and Top Goal Scorer 2011/2012. At 18, Simone made the move to Everton in 2013 and now is one of the veterans on the squad, riding the wave from relegation to promotion and beyond.

Simone takes us through her recent world record breaking goal, scoring the fastest-ever international goal, breaking Alex Morgan’s record. During the 2016 European Qualifying match against Georgia, the 11-second goal beat the previous 12 second goal scored by Morgan. What was that experience like and what does that milestone mean? Katya Gokhman
Katya Gokhman is a great example of someone who continues to carve her own path no matter which road she finds herself on. Angela Beard
Representing Australia on the U-17 and U-20 squads, Angie Beard is one of the more dynamic defenders in the women’s game. Currently with Brisbane Roar in the W-League, the 19-year old was a nominee for the 2015/16 W-League Young Footballer of the Year award. Angie’s defensive craftiness led to her being awarded Brisbane Roar’s Player of the Year for 2015/16.

A product of the Queensland Academy of Sport, Angie is a fierce competitor who gleefully tackles every obstacle that comes her way. One example – her recent injury that occurred soon after being called up to the full Australian squad. Angie shares with us how she overcame disappointment with determination. Now she is back and ready to don the orange for Brisbane and the gold for Australia. Women’s National Team midfielder brings us back to her days growing up in Virginia Beach and how she developed her love for the game.

Anyone who has gone through the trophy hall at University of Virginia knows the name of Angela Hucles. It took 15 years for someone to come along and break a few of her all-time scoring records. Angela’s journey into pro soccer began as a member of the first-ever Boston Breakers team and in fact, scored the first goal in the history of the Breakers (in 2001 a preseason exhibition match against Duke Blue Devils).

As a member of the USWNT, Angela was a player known for her ability to come off the bench in pivotal moments and strike an impactful pose. In 2008, Angela finished the Olympic campaign tied with the most goals of the tournament and a gold medal around her neck.

Her impact on the game didn’t end there. Angela has spent her post-soccer career giving a voice to those in desperate need of one. Angela is the current president of Women’s Sports Foundation; She has worked with the U.S. State Department and You Can Play organization to help empower LGBT youth through sport; and she founded Empowerment Through Sport Leadership Series, a unique conference featuring speakers and programs dedicated to teaching leadership and healthy living on and off the pitch.

Jovanna Damjanovic
